Pincushion od Karlien De Villiers

Južna Afrika

Južna Afrika

The design was inspired by the form and colour of the pincushion protea (Leucospermum cordifolium) which is native to southern Africa. This is a protected protea species and grows in the wild on the slopes of the Paarl mountain where I go for daily walks after work. The flower of this plant has a sphere of thin orange coloured stems, each with a tiny head, which makes it look like a pin cushion – hence its name. For this design I wanted to capture the colours of the flower as well as its distinct shape, and to recreate it in an abstracted form to create an interesting and vibrant pattern.
